to Gentoo dev or not to Gentoo dev

So after a little post about Regen2 on the Gentoo-dev mailing list. I've been offered mentoring to become an official gentoo dev. I'm conflicted, my main reason for saying yes would be to learn stuff that I can't learn on my own. But I'm not sure I really want to be a gentoo-dev this means doing these other time consuming things, and I wouldn't be able to do nearly enough from the inside. I still have to proceed with regen2... as I don't believe gentoo (in spirit) can be saved from within. So should I work to become an offical gentoo dev?

  1. The argument that this mentoring would give you skills you couldn't acquire on your own implies that fundamental knowledge of how the system works is somehow not visible from without, only from within. But is there not documentation available for virtually all aspects of the distribution? In my view, this excellent documentation is an asset that separates Gentoo from virtually all others, and I wonder if you couldn't gain the "insider knowledge" who imply on your own ...

I would wait until you find you can't proceed further, at least with regen2, without the presumed benefits of formally becoming a developer. As you also imply, the role of Gentoo developer would also burden you with additional tasks, a role that might conflict and compete with or even eclipse what you're trying to do with regen2. However, this is purely a view from outside the wall; it would interesting to hear from a Gentoo developer (or ex-developer).

  2. oh it isn't that the documentation isn't excellent, and yes that is one of gentoo's greatest assets. I just think that sometimes it's better to talk to people to understand something. sometimes the documentation is aimless for what you are trying to do. meaning you could spend a week going through it, or 5 minutes asking someone. plus, documentation doesn't always explain the why.
